My account is full of fake information and I only keep it so I can manage my business pages.

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

A dude wrote a book about social media and has no social media accounts? Lol šŸ˜‚ what's the point of that??

Anyway, I've been aware of the Facebook data thing for years. Try not to share too much.

I basically only have Facebook for the dank meme pages. Most of my friends and family are probably sick of me by now.

šŸ¤—

@shayne

I didn't delete my account, but I've posted nothing but spam, and misinformation on there since the beginning. I never understood the worlds love affair with that platform. To each their own I guess. I still have an account under a business name, but haven't used it in years. Can't even remember the last time I logged in.

Faceberk cancelled my account years ago because I never used it. I didnt see the attraction of re-connecting with people I didnt have the personal relationships to stay in touch with anyway. Nor did I especially miss finding out what they had for dinner...

Wish they'd do me the courtesy of canceling my account. LOL

If they cant squeeze any data out of you, you are a burden.

As someone smarter than me observed 'If you are getting a free service, its you that is getting sold'.

Just remembered when I stopped using them. It was right after it broke that they were conducting psychological experiments on users manipulating news feeds..

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2014/oct/02/facebook-sorry-secret-psychological-experiment-users

This crosses a huge ethical line!

I have had a lot of social media accounts. I also tried drugs and alcohol. None of it is all bad, but I decided that Heroin and Facebook was better left alone :)

PS. I never tried Heroin, but I was very close when my friends began to experiment with it. It was a terrible time. One of them has ruined his life completely.

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

I don't do drugs, but the internet can be addictive. I've had lots of accounts, but I have to try and limit the time I spend on this stuff.

I know what you mean!

I'm not deleting it. At my age most of who I know and what I want to know them for are on Facebook. It's also the perfect recruiting ground for Steemit. As far as my business goes, it is still the 2nd most useful tool behind Google for reaching customers. You have to be where your customers are hanging out and right now that is still facebook for me. I was up at Facebook HQ 2 months ago and Zuck was, as he always is, very approachable. I was very close to telling him about why I use steemit but I bit my tongue because I was there for my own business agenda. They are still doing great things up there.

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

I wonder if he even knows about Steemit. I'm sure there are really good people there trying to change the world in good ways. They just have so much power now and may be mis-using it.

I'm sure he does. And you're right. I remember being up there years ago when their motto was just "break things". They were the counter culture and everyone loved them, now they are big brother. When did it change? I say the IPO. Instead of being beholden to the user they became enslaved to the share holder. Tough position to be in.

I don't plan to delete facebook, I enjoy facebook, but like you, I have deleted the app because its way to addictive. My husband and a few of my closest friends never use it, but i wont be deleting:-)

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

I haven't deleted mine, but I am using it much less.

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

I won't send you a friend request ;)

wow. I never knew about this tag. Amazing.

Myself Im not deleting facebook because it's still very usefull tool to keep in touch with your supporters, friends etc. But definetly I dont care so much any more about uploading posts on that platform. In 3 weeks I got more followers here and engagement rate on steemit is bigger than I could ever imagine. so Facebook is slowly becoming a history.

You wrote:
"What struck me is that he says in the article 'I never had social media accounts'. So how does he know? "

Im a social media marketer and I dont even have a mobile device (I got rid of it 2 years ago). So I can understand this guy and I can relate to him.
Why anyone need to assume that one need to have social media account in order to understand threats of having one.

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

Okay, so he can write about it, but he may not understand the positive aspects of social media. It's not all bad

Absolutely.
At the end of the day we're always finding reasons to like something or dislike. Depending on our approach.

So if we're neutral then we will be neutral. He probably was very against social media and he only focused on negatives.

If we do our research it's great to hear from those who are haters or lovers :)

I hope it does make sense

Also would you mind checking my last post and sharing your opinion in regard to asked quetion: "Will crypto and blockchain divide humanity?". Im very curious what's your view on that issue.

Cheers, Piotr

These are just technologies. They may disrupt the current businesses and create new opportunities.

You may have seen my thoughts on paid votes ;)

"You may have seen my thoughts on paid votes ;)"

Not really. I just found you few days ago. As paid votes you mean bots? What's your view? Are you stricly against them ? Or do you accept them as a very deep part of this platform. Something that is at the core of steemit and it's bad but it's just exist?

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

Some call them bots. I'm okay when minnows give their posts a small boost, but the massive votes some people are buying make the trending page useless. It's all promoted content and nothing to do with what the community likes. Those selling the votes are the real winners.

Hi,

I completly agree with you. I think bots should be used only as a little boost but reaching treninging page should not be possible this way. But also ... do you think people even bother to visit trending page any more? I think only beginners do. After one week they all stop. So Im not sure if it's worth to fight that battle.

I made my first contest ever. Would you mind checking it out and sharing your feedback? And perhaps also commenting as Im interested what is your view on discussed issue:

I would really appreciate if you could share some of your experience with me :)

I didn't delete mine @steevc because this is also a platform where we can saliently advertise steemit to our friends and eventually have matters in our hands bec of the booming market of our platform. What do you think man

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

I do have FB account but never use it .i wud prefer deleting it but there are some valuable people I have been friends with cant lose them....the only thing stopping me.

Nah Im not deleting mine. We have know all along this was going on, it's the business model of Facebook. But now that it's out in the open I have been a bit more vocal about my dislike of the situation. So perhaps "they will Delete me" for doing so. Curious to what fines will be levied against them. Money the Government will keep of course.

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

Not for now but I'm not using it very often. Facebook is shit but all the contacts are on Facebook. So can't do anything about that. Can't delete Facebook, at least not yet

Interesting. I deleted mine in 2007.

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

I had a proxy account that I created once. I don't plan to use it and thus no point in deleting it. Really don't care for fb that much except for the fact that it messed up privacy of it's customers.

I still use it but I prefer to use more steemit, it generates income

Ā  Ā· Ā 7 years agoĀ

facebook seems like a total waste of time
steemit all the way
