There are more than enough gaming headsets to choose from, but which one is right for you?

While reviewing headsets can be very subjective, in that it is really down to personal taste, there are a select few that do stand out from the crowd and should definitely be considered if you want performance and a quality product.

The Corsair Void Wireless headset, (not the pro version) is quite possibly the best headset I have had the privilege of owning, with my £300 studio headphones that I use in the recording studio, in a close second.

Whats in the Box?

The headset I bought was in fact a refurbished set, that was refurbished by Corsair themselves. It also came with a work sheet that outlined exactly what had been done.

Box Damaged. Replaced.
Missing Cable. Replaced.
Store Display Item Returned.
Unit Charged, Tested, Good for Sale.

So at half the price, I got a headset that has spent most of its life in a store cabinet.
Apart from the headset itself, there is also a USB wireless dongle, a USB cable Type A to Micro USB connection and a multi language quick start, user guide.

First Impressions.

Looking closer at the headset, you can see that the attention to detail is second to none. The adjustability of the ears is quite good, in that instead of the ears coming out of the top brace, they in fact sleeve over the top brace, making it much more comfortable to adjust while its on your head.
The mic piece folds up away from your mouth with satisfying clicks that will lock it into place at any hight you set it at. The ear pieces fold down, which I think is a nice touch because like most people I tend to leave them around my neck when not in use, and instead of having hard plastic digging into my collar bone, it is the nice soft ear cushions.
The cushions on the top brace and ears are fabric, and not plastic coated crap that flakes off no sooner than you buy them and is very comfy, they also do a good job at eliminating outside noise. Even now when typing this review, I am listening to some music with them, my mechanical keyboard can be quite loud, and I don't hear nothing. Even with the music turned right down, I can barely hear the space bar when I hit it with my sausage thumbs.

On the left side we can find 2 buttons, a power button that is lower set than the mic mute button, so you can tell the difference when they are on your head.
On the base there is a toggle switch that controls the volume, the surround on/off switch and equalizer selection button, all in one toggle. And just next to that is the micro USB socket that is strictly used for charging.
And finally, each side has a corsair logo with RGB lighting behind them.

The software.

The headset will work straight out of the box with stock settings. However, if you want to control the equalizer, surround and the RGB, you will have to download and install the Corsair Unity Engine, this can control multiple peripherals from Corsair, including the Void headset.

RGB.

The RGB, when used without the Corsair software, just rotate from red, yellow, green, blue and so on. With the software, you can control multiple lighting effects, including Static colours, Breath, Blink, Beat, Pulse and Rainbow, with each being modified even further to suit your taste.

EQ Presets.

The stock settings are set to a basic flat EQ, but with the software, there is a standard 6 presets in which you can choose from, but there is also the ability to create as many presets as you want, with a range of 10 EQ's from 32hz all the way up to 16khz.
Under the EQ tab, there is also the surround sound button to turn it on or off, and just next to it there are 2 more sliders, one for mic volume and another for the side tone.

Infomic.

This is a retentively light tab, consisting of 3 adjustments. Brightness of the RGB on your headset, mic mute interval and low battery interval warning.

Sound Quality.

I could tell you all about the specs of the headset, but that doesn't really tell you about the quality of the audio. The volume the headset can produce is actually quite good, not so loud as though it will deafen you, but not so low you can't hear individual sounds. So a plus in my book there.
The twin 50mm drivers are very crisp, the highs are very clean and distinguishable, the mids remain very clear and crisp while the lows remain solid and punchy.
The ''7.1 surround'' seems to be a gimmick that most headphones are trying to pass off. Although it is not a true 7.1 sound, (it can't be as there is only 2 speakers) it is more of a software based system. To the untrained ear, it can seem like magic and fool any standard user, however, having a history with recording and studio/mastering work, I can tell you it is a cleaver combination of splitting the signal into different bands and delaying them ever so slightly to imitate a surround sound feeling.
When in game I do find the ''Surround'' works quite well in delivering a reasonable effect,, but when listening to music and movies, it can be very off putting.
The mic on the other hand, is OK, not fantastic, people can hear you very well, it does have a good range, its just the lows/bass is not there. But this is an affliction that can be found in most other headsets.

Conclusion.

Overall the sound quality is fantastic, the build quality is second to none, battery life is impressive and so our the lighting effects of the RGB. However, I would of liked to see the headphones work as a stand alone via the USB cable, without the use of the dongle, just in case you loose it. Other than that. For a tad under £110, they are an ideal companion when gaming, and for those that know, I have mentioned a few times in previous posts how much I love them and how much more I love Alien Isolation thanks to this headset. Go and buy some. You wont find better for under £150-£200.

Thanks for reading.
