Animal Activities #17

In a small village surrounded by rice fields and hills, there lives a village dog named Bayu. He is not an expensive breed, nor is he a special pet. But for Mr. Darto, his owner who is a farmer, Bayu is a loyal friend and an extraordinary field guard.

Every morning, when the sun just rises from behind the hill, Bayu wakes up and runs ahead of Mr. Darto to the rice fields. He will circle the boundaries of the fields, mark his territory, and chase away birds or mice that try to steal the harvest. It is not uncommon for Bayu to bark loudly when he sees a wild boar approaching at night, making other farmers wary.

Even so, Bayu is not only fierce. In the afternoon, he likes to lie on the rice field embankment while watching the ducks released by Mrs. Darto. Sometimes, the village children would come and play with Bayu. He would wag his tail happily, letting the children ride on his back as if he were a small horse.

But one day, Bayu did not come home. Pak Darto and his wife were worried. They searched all over the village, calling his name until night fell. The next morning, they found him lying weakly on the edge of the forest with a wound on his leg, probably attacked by a wild animal.

Pak Darto carried Bayu home, cleaned his wound carefully, and cared for him for weeks. The whole village prayed for his recovery. After a month, Bayu could stand and walk again. He was not as strong as before, but his spirit had not changed. He still barked when he heard strange sounds, still faithfully accompanying Pak Darto to the fields, even though he now walked a little limpingly.

Now, everyone in the village knew Bayu not only as a village dog, but as a little hero who guarded the fields, the children, and the peace of the village. He may not be able to talk, but his loyalty spoke volumes.

Bayu has become more than just an animal—he is part of the family, of the village, and of a story about unconditional love and courage in its simplest form.
