Today, I stumbled upon an amazing TV show on Nickelodeon: JUST ADD MAGIC. It stuck with me because, unlike other TV shows aimed at preteens, this show went beyond just entertaining and having fun, and actually tries to cultivate children's interest in a life skill: the art of cooking. And it does so by mixing magic and spells and comedy! What better way to spike a child's interest? Nice, Nick! I mean, it can't all be about superheroes and cats.
However, after a bit of research, I found out that Nickelodeon wasn't the originator of the show. Amazon Prime was, and JUST ADD MAGIC quickly became their top kiddies show. However, they aired only 2 seasons (though it seemed like 5, as seasons 2 and 3 had dual parts each). Recently (actually back in 2019 but we're not counting 2020, right?), Nickelodeon acquired TV distribution rights and started rerunning episodes. Also, a spinoff series called JUST ADD MAGIC: Mystery City just started and it's already rocking.
SYNOPSIS
In the spellbinding spinoff of the successful series Just Add Magic, we follow the magic cookbook to Bay City as it moves to three new protectors: step-siblings Zoe (Jolie Hoang-Rappaport, Cousins for Life, Adventures in Wonder Park) and Leo (Tyler Sanders, Fear the Walking Dead), and their downstairs neighbor Ish (Jenna Qureshi, Mozart in the Jungle). Each of the three brings a unique skill to the table, as the cookbook unlocks a centuries-old mystery that takes them on a historical adventure through the city streets in a race to find a secret recipe.
