In this city of bricks and stones, just seeing a cricket bat makes me want to grab one and play. This morning, after arriving on campus, a senior brother came up and said, "Bowl a few balls, I want to bat." After he finished playing, he sat beside us and started talking. He said, "Cricket is a game of passion. I used to play it all day during my childhood. Cricket is deeply intertwined with Bengali emotions."

Since coming to Dhaka, he hasn’t been able to play cricket much. Hearing that, I also joined in the conversation about cricket. While talking to him, memories of a few incidents from my madrasa days suddenly came to mind. Playing and watching cricket had become an obsession for me.

Back then, in the madrasa, we were given free time in the afternoon for sports. And we would rush far and wide just to play cricket. However, there was a strict rule: we weren’t allowed to go beyond the madrasa boundary. But the boundary was too small to play cricket properly. So we often sneaked off to a nearby field. One day, a teacher caught us and scolded us, saying, "Why are you playing here despite being warned not to?" As punishment, they stopped our food for that day. Later, after a lot of pleading, they resumed our meals.

I also have a memorable experience related to watching cricket. It was during the Nidahas Trophy when Bangladesh had a thrilling victory. I had run far away from the madrasa just to watch that match. That match against Sri Lanka is still fresh in the memory of all Bangladeshi cricket fans. That night, when they came to take attendance, I was missing. The next morning, the teacher asked me where I had been. I replied, "I went to wash my clothes, so I missed the headcount." The teacher didn’t question further. Those moments of sneaking out to watch matches still flash before my eyes, and I was sharing all of this with that senior brother.

The past is never truly forgotten. When I recall those golden days, I can’t help but wish I could go back in time. Life would have been so much more beautiful.
