A few years ago, I witnessed the simple yet extraordinary power of the word sorry. At that time, I was on my way home from a family event in a small town. That time going home to a small town from family event. Long queue at train station only one counter was open; it felt the heat, and not just from outside the weather outside it was all about human emotions of people dozed as waiting.

And in front of me was this old fella all shook up trying to figure out how much money he had counted for a ticket. He looked incredibly disapproving, his hands were shaking and voices from behind him sound frustrated. Young man behind me get annoyed with in a out-loud manner “Sir, you can do it faster?” We have business too!

The old man was startled and spilled some of his cash. The air went sour. I went straight and helped him to be able to do his change. But then, something that hit me deep inside happened next. He who was standing with me young man, and seeing the somber expression on the face of a man; took a deep breath and told him quite softly, “ I’m sorry man, I didn’t mean to scare you. I’m just exhausted. Please forgive me.

The man glanced at him, gave a weak smile and responded, “OK Son.

Hearing that, the atmosphere around us changed. People began to calm down, some even helped count the remaining money of the man. The young man then paid for the man’s ticket with his own money. I witnessed how one word of apology could calm anger, dissolve tension, and unite empathy that had previously been drowned out by fatigue.

That day I learned that apologizing is not a sign of weakness, but rather the courage to admit mistakes and open the way for goodness. A sincere apology not just saves the mood, but also sacrifices and honour as well the relationship between persons.
