When it comes to shopping for everyday items, we all fall into two categories those who buy in bulk and those who buy only what they need at the moment. As a middle-class Nigerian man who is not yet married but enjoys being intentional about spending, I’ve come to see the beauty and benefit of bulk purchase.

In simple terms, bulk purchase means buying items in large quantity think of a full bag of rice, a carton of noodles, or buying 12 rolls of toilet paper at once. Single purchase is when you just buy what you need for the day or week, like one sachet of detergent or one pack of spaghetti.

Between these two which one is your favorite? And why.

I remember one time during the lockdown period, movement was restricted. My neighbors who always bought just enough for the day were stranded. But because I had stocked up earlier with a bulk purchase, I didn’t stress. I had enough food and supplies to last weeks.

Even as a single guy, bulk buying works for me. It saves time, reduces constant trips to the market, and most importantly, it helps me avoid impulse spending. When you’re in the market too often, you end up buying things you didn’t plan for.

If you’re looking for peace of mind and cost-effectiveness, I’ll recommend bulk purchase especially for items that don’t spoil easily, like rice, beans, toiletries, and other household supplies. But if your budget is tight or you don’t have storage space, then start small buy semi-bulk. For example, instead of one sachet of milk, buy a small tin.

I once advised a friend who earns weekly to start buying in bulk gradually. He started with noodles and seasoning cubes. After a few months, he realized how much he saved and decided to apply that to other items.

Some people believe bulk purchase is only for the rich while single purchase is for average person what is your take ?

Absolutely not. That’s not true. I’m not rich I’m just a regular guy with a budget. Bulk buying is about planning, not wealth. It’s a smart move to reduce long-term costs. Even a small salary can support bulk purchases if you cut unnecessary expenses.
