Poverty: Contagious and Hereditary.
Hello friends, it's good to have you all here again. I want to talk about poverty. I believe poverty is an acute lack of money and other resources that could be used as a means of exchange for money, resulting in the inability to properly care for basic needs like food, clothing, shelter, health care and basic education for an extended period.
A careful look at this definition suggests that the focus is placed on economic poverty, the absence of wealth. In reality, poverty can manifest itself in various aspects of a person's life.
Different forms of Poverty:
Economic poverty is characterised by insufficient income, access to credit and other assets, resulting in the inability to care for basic human needs. A large number of materially poor persons are also suffering from social poverty, characterised by very few relationships, friends and family. They usually have little or no involvement with their community, "who rarely wants the suggestions of a poor man".
Poverty can also be cultural, environmental and spiritual poverty.
Paradox of the poverty cycle
Poverty can affect the way we think, and the way we think can also lead to more poverty, a cycle that fuels itself to keep the poor perpetually poor. This cycle is perpetuated not only by economic factors but also by the mindset of those trapped in poverty. The poor will often console themselves with the words, " I have tried my best", "This is all I can possibly do", "I will not kill myself", and "If it is God's will, I will make it".
Apart from the fact that the poor man's children are equally deprived of credit facilities and financial literacy, they often inherit their parents' philosophy of wealth, leading to a generation of poor people lacking the willpower and financial support.
Without a strong will, the mindset of the poor can be contagious such that you choose saving over investment, afraid to invest with the belief that a bird at hand is far worth a hundred in the bush.
It is the scarcity mindset of the poor that makes a person buy 2 China phones (Inferior goods) that cost 50 steem a year instead of buying a good quality phone at 100 steem and using it for 2 years. Confirming the idea that poverty is more expensive compared to the rich.
Breaking the cycle of poverty
In the Nigerian context, the cycle of poverty is seen in the fact that the son of a palm wine tapper becomes a palm wine tapper after his father, meanwhile the son of a minister becomes the next minister.
Breaking free from the cycle of poverty requires a lot of effort and a shift in the way we think, a complete change of mindset. Going against deeply entrenched reasoning and attitude towards wealth.
Poverty runs in the family the same way we expect the child of a teacher to be intelligent.
If the circumstances of your birth have placed you in a poor family, you are not doomed. Those from poor backgrounds have demonstrated resilience and adapted to their circumstance in ways that the rich can't imagine.
If the breakout can not be fully realized in your lifetime, you can place your kids on the path that will lead to their breakthrough. This could be achieved by investing in their academic and financial education, including skills and proper attitude or philosophy.
Conclusion :
The solution to our problem with poverty starts with each and every one of us. It starts with the mind and shows in our pockets. You can take the first step by changing your perception of things around you.
