What is Self-medication and why we adopt it
- As the name indicates self means medicine 💊 taken by ourselves without the recommendation of physician or healthcare professional.
- Sometimes we got minor problems regarding health issues like cold, body pain, headache and allergy.So in this case we take medicine by our own thoughts.
Basically we just take medicine on the basis of feelings not actually knowing what’s wrong.In some cases it might be harmful and leads to severity but people specially in Pakistan and India take risks and do self medication and most luckily they recover from health disorder.
What kind of self medication do I practice
When we talk about self medication, I have an experience of self medication.Sometimes I choose local pharmacy and ask them to give medicine like for headache, cold, pain and cough.
Reason why I choose self medication
There is a bitter reality of the society in which we are living.The purpose of doctor is to treat the patient but unfortunately in my society doctors just look patient as an investor of their business.

Once I got pain in my heels (lower feet).I take it casual and avoid the pain by saying that Today I walk alot it will be fine after taking some rest.
But the pain as time passes it got severe.So I decided to visit a doctor.He started irrelevant tests like blood pressure, uric acid, Malaria and Dengue.After these reports he says you got uric acid disease so take medicine for a month that will available only on our pharmacy.
I take medicine but got no relief so finally I decided to quit the medicine and use my grandma technique “Take oil and massage properly on the feet” after two days my pain was gone.
Do you experience any adverse effect of your self Medication
Yes! I experience adverse effects of self medication.I want one of them here.Once during exams I got headache and cough.To save time I asked my brother to take medicine for me.He brings tablets and syrup.
In morning before exam I take double dose of medicine by thinking that I got better and do my exam.But unfortunately the medicine got reaction.I was sleepy duo to syrup as it contains certain amount of alcoholic contents.That paper was not good and I got D-grade.That’s what I bear side effect.
Give some general disadvantages of self Medication.
There are some common side effects of self Medication
- Mis use of medicines
It leads to antibiotic resistance which later causes complications. - Waste of money
As there is wrong treatment of disease so there are chances of money wasting because of no value return. - Addiction
Some medicines like sleeping pills.If we use with out need person got addiction of sleeping pills. - Over dosage
Taking over dose leads to organs damage and cause allergic reactions.
