When Owulama was Growing up, she loved eating Yam alot. Yam was, is and will forever be her favorite food, Owulama loves eating Yam so much. Her mom made yam porridge for her almost every night. Sometimes her mother prepares it with vegetables, and sometimes with beans.
One evening, Owulama mother was busy talking on the phone. Dinner time was coming, and Owulama stomach started crying😁,, she was already hungry and was eagerly waiting for her mother to serve dinner. She entered the kitchen and shouted, "Mom! I’m hungry!"
Mom smiled and said, "Owulama, why don't you try cooking the yam porridge you love eating yourself tonight? I’ll tell you what to do."
Owulama was amazed. She had never cooked anything before! But she really wanted to try though.
"Okay!" She replied...
Her mother stayed close to her in the kitchen and gave her easy instructions.
"First," she said, "get one tuber of yam and peal it"
Owulama found tubers of yam in the cupboard and picked one tuber from it. She pealed it and poured it into a pot.
"Now," Owulama Mom Said, "we need three cups of water" Owulama filled a measuring cup with water. She poured it into the pot. A little water splashed on her shirt, but she didn’t mind because,, she was so eager to learn.
"Good job," Mom said to Owulama.
"Now put the pot on the gas and turn it on," Mom said.
Owulama was careful. She turned on the gas carefully,,. And put the pot on the gas.
"Now let's wait," Mom said.
Owulama watched the pot closely. At first, nothing happened. Then little bubbles started to pop on the surface.
"Look, it’s boiling!" Owulama said to her mother in a loud voice with excitement.
"Good!" Owulama's mother replied. "Now add the necessary ingredients to it, cover the pot and turn the heat down very low."
Owulama did exactly what her mother said. Then they waited some minutes more.
Owulama sat at the table, swinging her legs. She could smell the yam porridge cooking. It smelled warm, soft and so nice.
After about fifteen minutes, Mom said to Owulama, "Okay, let's check."
Owulama lifted the lid carefully. A cloud of steam rose up.
She saw that the yam porridge was ready and all the water was gone.
"You did it!" Mom said with a beautiful smile on her face.
Owulama couldn’t believe it. She had cooked yam porridge all by herself!
Owulama took a bite.
Owulama's Yam Porridge 🥰
"Mmm!" She said. "It’s so good!" She loved how the yam porridge she prepared taste.
Mom smiled. "See? Cooking is not so hard. You just have to be patient and concentrate to learn."
Owulama felt super proud. It was just simple yam porridge, but it tasted better because she made it herself.
That night, Owulama decided to set the table herself. She served yam porridge to her family members. They all ate together, and everyone said the yam porridge was perfect.
Owulama decided she wanted to learn more. Maybe next time, she would cook something different to improve her cooking skills. Maybe even spaghetti! Which is also one of her favorite food.
But yam would always be her favorite. It was the first thing she ever made in her entire life.
And every time she ate yam porridge after that, she remembered the day she became a real little chef. Owulama was so proud of herself and she's thankful to her mother for taking out time to teach her how to prepare food, and it wasn't just any food but her favorite food!
