Clean Hands for a Healthy Community

Step you must take in your day to day to preserve individual health and reduce disease is washing your hands. Hand hygiene is one of the major priorities in my daily routine; after routine like going to washroom, eating and before eating and so on as well. I will always have hand sanitizer when traveling and I try to have soap at home whenever possible. Hygiene of hands in children is part of daily home learning, even toddlers have this concept from early.

Effectiveness-wise, even with filthy or oily hands the best way to remove dirt, viruses and bacteria from your hands is washing them with soap and running water.

Soap can dissolve the fatty coating of viruses and remove microorganisms from the skin surface Soap is washing soap off your hands. On the other hand, alcohol-based hand sanitizers containing at least 60% alcohol can be effective at eliminating most forms of germs without soap and water when not able to access soap-and-water ( i.e. outside home or on-the-go). But they are not nearly as effective at dirty or greasy hands.

I have promoted hand hygiene especially in schools and at the grassroots level towards public enlightenment. I did this education through simple outreach activities, distributing informative leaflets, and holding demonstrations on how to wash hands properly using the WHO (World Health Organization) method. Inviting children to sing while washing their hands is also an effective method because it is fun and easy to remember. I also use social media to spread infographics and educational videos about hand hygiene.

If we wanna increase the community hand hygiene we can give such some advices that can be shared are :

1. Ensure handwashing facilities are located and available in public areas like schools, madrassahs, shops/ markets and at airports/agro points.

2. Place signage reminder stencils in appropriate locations that per the importance of hand washing and how to

3. Involve community leaders in the hygiene campaign, because their influence can increase participation.

4. Conduct handwashing training or competitions for children at school so that they get used to it.

5. Provide consistent examples as adults in good hand hygiene practices.
