Tall annual plants called sunflowers are named for their sun-like, brilliant yellow flower heads. Large, broad leaves and a coarse, hairy stem are common features. . They are grown for their seeds, which are both an oil source and a favorite food.
Features of sunflower flowers
Large, vivid yellow petals usually encircle a center disk made up of several small florets in sunflower flowers. The seeds grow on the disk, which can be dark brown or even black in color.
The technique utilized to grow sunflower blooms
Prepare the Soil: Sunflowers want their soil to have lots of organic matter and good drainage. Work the soil down to about two feet, and if needed, add aged manure or compost.
Planting: After the latest date of local frost, sow sunflower seeds directly into the ground. Plant seeds in rows 2-3 feet apart, about 1 inch deep and 6 inches apart.
Watering: Maintain a constant moisture content in the soil, particularly during germination. Sunflowers require frequent watering even after they have established themselves, especially in dry spells.
Thinning: To provide each sunflower plant enough room to grow, space the seedlings out to a distance of one to one and a half feet after they are a few inches tall.
Support: As sunflowers get taller, they could require support, depending on the kind. If necessary, you can support them using cages or stakes.
Control of Pests and illnesses: Watch out for illnesses like powdery mildew and pests like caterpillars and aphids. Use chemical or organic controls as necessary.
Harvesting: Depending on the cultivar, sunflowers usually reach maturity in 70–100 days. When the seeds are full and the back of the head turns yellow, harvest the blooms.
