PROCASTINATION: KILLER OF DESTINY

Procrastination is something everyone of us have tried to deal with. We always convince ourselves we will do things later but end up rushing to during deadlines. In this post, I’ll be talking a bit about my experience but before doing that, I’ll love to invite @bossj23, @chant and @bonaventure24 to participate.

Yeah… I have actually pushed task aside, to handle later just to go and continue my games especially if it is small task. Even after playing, i still find one excuse not to do it at that moment, thinking I still have enough time, until when it gets to the day of submission, i start putting unnecessary pressure on myself just to meet the deadline.

It depends on the task at hand. If it is something that is easy to do and interesting i quickly jump into it and do it as fast as possible. But when the task becomes a bit complicated that involves me making a little research or not clear enough for me, I get distracted with social media or other commitment that I’ve abandoned. The worse part is, if I don’t even know where to start from, it gives me a reason to delay.

A company came to my community and were doing employment. My dad had worked with them before and told me that this company need more of skilled workers than people with educational qualifications. He advised me to go learn either crane operator or welding. According to him, they were one of the highest paid staff.

Since, they were just coming , I felt it would take them awhile before the contract kick off. I kept procrastinating training. My dad kept disturbing me to go and learn it, incase opportunity comes up, his son would be among the first to be selected since I’m an indigene.

Behold, the recruitment exercise began after several months and the first category of people needed were heavy duty operators to work at the yards but I was nowhere to be found.

I was in my crane operator lessons. The worse part of it is that I was only 4 months gone out of nine months training. After the training was over, I tried to use my little influence as an indigene to get in but it didn’t work out. That was how I loosed that job.

• You have to work on your mindset by eliminating distraction and remind yourself that the word “later”, is a killer of time. It takes discipline to overcome it.

• Once you encounter any task that looks cumbersome, break it down into smaller tasks and set realistic deadlines to achieve them.

• Task that takes less than 5 minutes, quickly handle them. At least, you know that one is over before moving on to whatever thing it is, you’re doing.
