From Sony's MAVICA, the first commercial digital camera in 1981, to the latest mirrorless camera, what is the 'World's Most Beautiful Camera' chosen by camera enthusiasts and users in the history of digital cameras for over 30 years?

Although the history of film cameras is about 100 years ahead of digital cameras, we surveyed users' preferences for digital cameras that are currently mainstream through the forum bulletin board in the SLR Club, the largest digital camera club in Korea.

'Which camera do you think has the coolest design?' A total of 13 forums and 176 camera users participated in the survey.

First of all, the numbers 1 to 5 will be revealed.

Both the first and second places were occupied by Fujifilm's X-100(S) and X-Pro1

1

Both products were evaluated for their ideally harmonized design of analog and digital. The X-100(S) is a snap camera with a retro body and integrated lens style that looks like an RF film camera. The built-in viewfinder stimulates the user's emotions as well as practical usability. The stylish knob dial and the silver color match stand out.

2

The X-Pro1 is a camera designed with a high level of satisfaction when held in the hand. If the X-100(S) is a design that arouses the desire to possess, the X-Pro1 is a concept that arouses the desire to use it. The body painted with black paint conveys a strong yet heavy analog hand taste. As Fujifilm's flagship mirrorless, you can try out the Fuji XF lens and the exclusive Carl Zeiss lens, so you can taste the authentic photo results.

In 3rd and 4th places, the Olympus OM-D E-M5 and PEN E-P5 were ranked in order.

3

Olympus OM-D series and PEN series, which are considered the hottest mirrorless cameras in recent years, are evaluated to have reinterpreted analog sensibility digitally. It shows the most sophisticated and outstanding mechanical perfection in the Micro Four Thirds camp. Although the OM-D E-M5 was a model released before the latest product, the E-M1, it received higher scores in the design category from users. The straight and concise masculine design and refined metal texture are harmonized with this camera. Especially, the silver color evokes a classic look reminiscent of a film camera.

4

The PEN E-P5 is the highest-end model of Olympus' long-selling PEN series. While the E-M1 is armed with mechanical performance and style, the E-P5 has a sophisticated and detailed body design aesthetic. The Olympus Snap prime lens 17mm f1.8 and the mount show a perfect sense of unity. The silver edge-cut dial and the blue silver ring of the lens give a luxurious gloss, and the mechanical shutter adds to the pleasure of hearing the heavy analog shutter sound when shooting. The 5-axis image stabilization mechanism even captures shake during shooting.

In joint 5th place, Panasonic GF1 and Pentax *istD rose side by side.

As the protagonist who opened the door of the mirrorless camera market, the Panasonic GF1 has both style and performance with a compact design and small size compared to DSLRs. This model, known for its small and pretty design, was especially popular with the white model.

The strong enthusiast-oriented Pentax *istD is the first camera that Pentax users choose for its design. It is Pentax's first digital SLR camera, and it was the world's smallest, lightest, and strongest camera at the time of its release.

In addition, Pentax K-3, Fujifilm S-3Pro, and Leica M Monochrom followed, and DSLRs such as Contax ND and Olympus E-1 were also selected. Although it was not included in the digital camera ranking, among film camera bodies, Contax G1, G2, iiia, Leica Oskar Barnack, Nikon F5, Canon F1, etc. were also recommended.

The best design cameras chosen by users are mainly mirrorless cameras, not DSLRs. One of the reasons why DSLRs are difficult to apply various designs is due to the characteristics of the design method and camera body structure. Cameras that satisfy user sensibility have one thing in common. 'Small size, fine detail, and hard metal texture' are exactly that. The key here is how well the retro design reinterpreted from the film camera is implemented.

There is a saying, “Ongoing and Easyshining”. It means 'to learn the old and to know the new', which means that by learning the old, you will discover new knowledge and principles. More than 100 years have passed since cameras appeared in history. It will be interesting to see which camera brand has the insight to bring the great design legacy of the past into a modern one.
