As is our family tradition, we set aside half a day each week to go fishing by the lake. This weekend, we made plans with the little boy next door to head out together after the kids finished their homework. Our child was over the moon about it—he absolutely loves going fishing with friends.

Since our child finishes homework quickly, we went out half an hour earlier than the neighbor’s boy. We first explored the lakefront, catching a few small fish. Soon after, the neighbor boy joined us, and the two kids started scooping around eagerly. To our surprise, they had quite the haul! They caught not just small fish but also several crayfish of different sizes. Two of the crayfish were especially large—bigger even than the ones sold at the market for making spicy crayfish dishes.

My neighbor and I walked behind them, watching the two little heads bobbing around. They’d crouch to search the water’s edge, then lift their nets with excited anticipation, eager to see what they’d caught. Their fuzzy heads bent close together, completely focused. This is the joy of childhood! When kids are interested in something and get to share the fun with friends, happiness knows no bounds.

On the way to the lake, I trotted behind my child, who was practically sprinting. He carried a fishing net pole that extends to 1.8 meters, along with a small lidded storage box filled with water—ready to hold the fish they’d catch.

Watching him dash ahead, grinning from ear to ear and marching with that carefree “I own the world” stride, I couldn’t help but laugh while worrying he’d trip. I chased after him, snapping photos all the way.

I thought: Kids truly get to be kids when they’re at play. Childhood should be like this—carefree and full of joy.
