Fern pine, whose scientific name is podocarpus macrophyllus, is a conifer of the genus podocarpus and family podocarpaceae.
It also has other names such as yew plum pine and buddhist pine.
This plant is native to southern Japan and southern and eastern China and is the northernmost species of its genus.
When ripe, the fruit scales are swollen, reddish-purple, fleshy, berry-like, and 1 to 2 cm long. Then they are eaten by birds, which spread the seeds in their droppings.
Fern pines are found in forests, open scrub, and roadsides from near sea level to 1000 m above sea level.
