Carnivorous Plants : traps and digests what they catch

A carnivorous plant is a plant that catches and digests insects or small animals for food. Humans are not in danger of being eaten. Plants need nutrients, or vitamins that help them grow. Usually, they get these from the soil.

Their roots absorb nutrients from the ground and carry them into the plant. Carnivorous plants also have roots, but they usually grow in soil that does not have many nutrients. Because of this, they catch insects and small animals to get what they need to grow. To catch their prey, these plants have to be very clever.

Most animals that eat only meat chase their food and use big, sharp teeth to catch and eat it. Carnivorous plants cannot run or bite. Instead, they use special leaves and chemicals to trap and digest insects and small animals.

When humans eat food, their stomachs break it down with chemicals so the body can absorb the nutrients. Similarly, carnivorous plants use chemicals to break down their prey, so they can take in the nutrients from it.

Some carnivorous plants, like sundews, have leaves coated with sticky goo. This goo traps insects and helps the plant digest them.
