Call for banning is the ultimate expression of fear

There's probably an authoritarian on each of your friends calling for banning A or B.

I like to use Penn Jillette's mnemonic of imagining the hypothetical justified use of a gun to evaluate situations.

I'd use a gun to stop someone who was trying to kill me.

Ban killing, all right.

You'd say that there just a few situations where you'd really pull the trigger.

Thus, there are just a few situations where banning is justified.

Those are the situations that go against freedom, hence related bans are pro-freedom.

Every other ban is against freedom. It's motivated by fear of losing control and authority.
