Desert ground squirrels are bold survivors. Some pose for me. One blackmails me. (His name is John Squeaks.)
This post includes photos of John and other unforgettable squirrels like Peppa Le Sid, a juvenile we rescued after finding him hit on the road. We paid for surgery to save his leg but nerve damage left one of his arms paralyzed. We thought he was a girl at first, Peppa for Peppa Pig and added le Sid after the sloth from Ice Age with the overbite, which our little guy had too.
I’m also sharing photos of a few mangy squirrels living by the roadside curve near a construction site. We medicated them with care, feeding each one to avoid overdosing. And there’s a set of young squirrels I photographed in a backyard where a whole wild family made their home.
Every one of them has a story and a lot of fight in them.

Tiny face. Big attitude. Ground Squirrel Momma and Youngster.
This one lived by the curve near the site. Mange is brutal but treatable if you’re patient.
Peppa Le Sid after surgery, tough little guy with a big overbite and a bigger heart.
Backyard babies learning to dodge hawks and pose for me.
