Right on, congrats!
I agree that STEEM is cheap. I've agreed for months. Just about 2 years, in fact! The price has been falling constantly for that entire 2 years. I went all in and have lost 99% (and still losing). Everybody said "right on, congrats!" when I bought in. They said the price was going to turn around any day, and go above $10 USD and never look back until at least $100. That was the prevailing wisdom (in fact, it was almost impossible to find anyone who believed otherwise). Steem may be messed up, but the blockchain is permanent and undeleteable, they said.
But yeah, maybe this collapse is temporary? Maybe this isn't the end of the cohesiveness of the project, but a massive buying opportunity? I guess that's what you're hoping. And yeah, that's what I was hoping 2 years ago, too.
(We joined on the same day, by the way. Happy Steemiversary.)
My personal financial situation right now is I'm on limited and fixed income, just paying the bills, and about to have a baby. My nestegg has deflated to almost nothing (I have $500 left in Steem and falling weekly.) I have a handful of silver coins, would love more weight, but don't have anything to buy it with. Also, I've been ejected from the banking system, so I have no bank accounts, credit cards, or PayPal. I have very little way to buy more Steem at this point, and nothing to buy it with anyway.
In other words, I'm just desperately hoping, like you, that this is a massive buying opportunity, and not a death spiral.
If it's a buying op, one thing that comes to mind is a takeover. Maybe insiders are crashing the price by dumping their huge ninja-"mined" stake, so that a hostile company can buy up the entire site/blockchain/currency in one swoop. Maybe a tech company or somebody with money is going to become the new owner, and they're having the price crashed so they can buy everything on the cheap? I've seen shit like that in the corporate world, it happens, maybe it's happening again. That's messy, but hey, at least we'd be destined for riches if it's true.
And since I can't buy, all I can do is earn. And earn I am. As you've seen in my weekly updates, I've never been growing as fast as I am right now. I'm half a dolphin and adding bulk quickly at these dismal prices.
Fully aware it can lose another 99%, and another, and another...

Everybody has a unique personal and financial situation. I have been in many of them. You seem like a good guy trying to do the right thing here, and you contribute to the best of your ability as do many people. I'd probably be better off leaving the money in BTC to be honest as a pure investment. But this is a little more than that. I like it here and I want to see it succeed, if I'm going to invest my time, I might as well invest some money too. One of the ways I am able to do that is buy some steem and power it up, and find ways to support hard working people like yourself and protect the reward pool. I fully acknowledge that this is a ultra-speculative investment and all the disclaimers that come with that.
I'm about to hit my target of about 50k, and after that I am probably done buying because I want to build other stuff in this ecosystem, unless it goes subpenny or something but I think it can recover. Then maybe instawhale!
That's crazy we joined on the same day! My account was dormant for a long while until I followed @theycallmedan over here after he left YouTube to watch his stuff on DTUBE. Then I got sucked in.

Oh I totally get it, and don't even disagree with you. I like it here and want it to succeed, too. It's just that our tiny (your larger but still small) investments ultimately aren't what will make or break this place. If we had tens of millions, we could single-handedly swing things around here! But our inputs can be (and in my case have been) reduced essentially to nothing. Other people are pulling funds out of Steem, we're putting funds (and years) in. We really have to hope that we aren't suckers. I've been made a sucker a lot of times, and my tolerance for it is pretty low at this point. As the price falls and falls, it becomes apparent that either we're brilliant and soon to be rich, or suckers that just lost everything. It's going to be one or the other.
That's cool about theycallmedan. I don't know him from YT, but every time I see him here on Steem he's doing good things, starting good projects, curating good posts. And yeah I wasn't active right away either, by Christmas 2017 I was though, and have posted/commented/curated every day since.
20 months full time effort, for 2 people and some help from a few friends, and we are down $4500. I'm not sure what 20 months work for 2 people normally goes for, but I bet it's more than -4500 USD!
All that can be fixed if there's a massive jump in the price. All we're asking for is a miracle, heh heh. Steem on.

That's kind of why the content I care about I push from my blog. My intellectual property won't exist solely on this platform of questionable future.
We are indeed small fries compared to some. This bear market is help distributing steem to more people like us, so i say whales dump away.

I’ve been buying when the steem/btc price dips. I have a decent supply of btc, especially when it spikes in price relative to the alts. I am tempted to go fiat to steem given the current steem/usd price.
