STEEMPUNK-NET - Why play?

in steemit •  7 years ago

The game concept was born before I arrived on Steemit, so I missed the initial promotion for it. Then I spotted a post which caught my attention because ... well, STEEMPUNK, people!

I liked the wordplay combining steem and steampunk. What I wasn't sure about was that it was an MMORPG game - to me that meant highly interactive, like other games I'd played online and subsequently dropped; and that it was a 'fighting' game - I am quite the pacifist (don't let anyone tell you otherwise!) to the point that while I used to love playing an early version of Mount & Blade it was the trading side I enjoyed and when it came to battling I would beg someone else to do it for me.

I know, I know. I even prefer to play Chinese Checkers to regular checkers because nobody dies.

Anyhoo, in the end, even though I think I thoroughly confused @dehenne with my questions about fighting, I couldn't resist finding out what this steempunknet game was all about. It had just been released from closed beta testing and was open to all. (@jedigeiss made the announcement post which caught my attention, and in which I proceeded to confuse both myself and poor dehenne. Don't track it down to read, I beg of you.)

Bravely (for me) I followed their Discord link, and with immense relief this introvert was greeted warmly by a great bunch of guys who were keen to see new members such as me (boy, I bet there are a few regrets now eh guys?!). I took to the game like a duck to water.

I AM HAVING A BLAST

Not only am I able to play (which means fight) in a very passive way - the battles are based on stats and activity and such behind the scenes - but over the past couple of months, since joining, I have also been allowed to contribute to part of the development of the game because the guys are open to suggestions (which you can read in the @steempunknet profile feed) from any one of us keen to help. I've also joined the ranks of official beta testers. That initiation ceremony was a bit rough in places though; try reassembling this mess in 30 minutes!

I bet your Ikea furniture assembly looks so easy now, eh?

A bonus to the fun of playing is the element of having the opportunity to collect some real currency. At the moment this is by being the top-ranking player on any given day. See the daily bulletins @steempunksnet publishes (note the extra 's' in the name). This is on top of anything you might post regarding the game, or earn for commenting on game-related posts. I'm sure you get the idea.

One of the most enjoyable reasons to play, for me at least, is that I get to develop my character by creating a back story. I recommend you all follow the adventures of Lady P. as she publishes excerpts from her diary. I know several other players who are also having a lot of fun creating stories around their characters, or the futuristic world most of the game is based in. I say most, because I have resisted the future and am firmly entrenched in Victorian England, where it all began ...

So, why play?

  • It adds an element of fun to what you already do on Steemit, with the bonus opportunity to earn currency.
  • It doesn't matter what your Steemit ranking or wallet value is, or whether you are a big or little fish in the pond, there is a level playing field in the game. All players have an equal chance at losing in battle to me.
  • The developers are great people. They have created a really friendly & open atmosphere in Discord; and take my oddball teasing with a good sense of humour (even with language translation confusion sometimes - blimey!).
  • You can enter into the spirit of a bit of role-play with your character. In a family-friendly way, of course.
  • The game is developing at a great rate of knots, and the potential for expansion is huge.
  • As with Steemit in general, you get to meet people from all over the world you wouldn't normally get to in 'real life'. Hanging out in the Discord channel with us can lead to a great sense of camaraderie.
  • You might have the opportunity to use your skills as an artist, a translator, or a writer (for example) within the game.
  • You can play the game no matter what time zone you are in.

So there you have it, many excellent reasons to play the game. The question then becomes why wouldn't you play? Join us, please.

I want battles with dice rolls and bots

lol, looks like great hijinx to be had in that game.

You'd have to come into the Discord channel and discuss that concept with the developers. The ins-and-outs are quite beyond me ... but I am good at battling! Lady Ada's pocket revolver comes in quite handy. ;)

question: should people start playing steempunknet? :D

@steempunknet 8ball

welcome to the steempunknet family do have fun and you probably want to do the fighting now or your account would one day turn to a mine zone lol

The thing that attracted me the most to SPN is that it gamifies the experience. Comments, votes, resteems--they add a layer that makes them mean more. That in itself is ingenious, as I feel the gamification aspect has a psychological effect on the whole experience here.
