Continuing our journey through the Royal Mint’s Innovation in Science series, we land on a coin that honours a man whose genius helped shorten a world war and laid the groundwork for modern computing — Alan Turing. In 2022, the Royal Mint issued a silver proof 50p coin to celebrate the extraordinary life and legacy of this remarkable mind, and it’s a must-have piece for anyone with a passion for precious metals and scientific history.

Alan Turing was born in 1912 and is best known for his work during World War II at Bletchley Park, where he led a team that cracked the Nazi Enigma code. This singular achievement is widely credited with helping to end the war years earlier than expected, saving countless lives. But Turing’s contributions didn’t stop with cryptography. He also laid the theoretical foundation for artificial intelligence and computing, devising what we now call the “Turing Machine” — a concept still used today to understand the limits of what computers can do.
Despite his brilliance, Turing faced persecution for his homosexuality and was tragically prosecuted in 1952, dying just two years later. Decades on, his name has been rightfully restored and honoured, including his place on the Bank of England’s £50 note and now, this beautifully struck 50p coin.
The 2022 Alan Turing silver proof coin is a fitting tribute. Struck in sterling silver (.925 purity) and finished to an immaculate proof standard, the coin weighs 8 grams and measures 27.3mm in diameter — consistent with the other entries in the Innovation in Science series. The obverse features Jody Clark’s portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the reverse, designed by Matt Dent and Christian Davies, integrates a hidden code within an intricate matrix of letters and numbers. It’s a subtle nod to Turing’s cryptographic work, inviting collectors to engage with the coin just as Turing engaged with the hidden patterns of wartime ciphers.
The mintage was limited, with only 3,000 coins issued, each housed in a sleek presentation case complete with an information booklet that explores Turing’s life and achievements. The attention to detail, from packaging to design, makes this coin not just a piece of precious metal, but a miniature monument to one of the most influential figures in modern science.
Like Charles Babbage before him, Turing fits seamlessly into this coin series. Both men imagined machines that would one day change the world. And with these coins, the Royal Mint allows us to hold a small token of their legacy in our hands — quite literally.
Tomorrow, we’ll continue our look at this clever and collectable series. For now, this Turing 50p stands as a glimmering reminder that innovation is more than theory or technology — it’s the courage to think differently.
