My main issue is that players never remember NPC names. So, to fix that, in the last D&D campaign I ran that ended about 6 months ago I did something to make sure they would remember.
Elderly human male, valet for the father figure that raised the PCs, Alfred.
Elderly human male, retired constable, Gordon.
Human female rogue, Selena.
Human female ranger, Helena.
Young human male, Jason.
Young human male, Richard.
Once they realized that all the NPCs were named after secondary Batman characters, they had no problems remembering who was who.

That's a good idea. I'm going to try using pictures as visual memory can be more acute.
