Challenges of running an Airbnb

in challenges •  3 hours ago

It's been now almost 10 months that I started my Airbnb. Booking wise it's been doing reasonably ok. There are high and low seasons, so one has to average it out. For my area, the best business months are from June to Sept, because it's monsoon time and everyone wants to come to the hills to spend time in nature. So whatever additional I earn in these months I need to save to take care of the remaining months. Nov, Feb and March are the dullest months and it is a challenge finding customers during this time. It is the exam time for children, so the whole family unit business takes a hit.

My first preference is always to rent to families, because when people come with children, they are mindful about their actions. When youngsters come then they make too much of mess and some times create nuisance also.

In all these 10 months of my business, I have come across all different types of customers. Till now I have hosted 53 groups at my Villa and most of them have been decent and also shared good feedback, but then there are some painful ones also, who no matter whatever you do, always have something to complaint about. As it is I am a person who does not like people who are always complaining, so it does annoy me, but then when you run a business, no matter whatever, Customer is the king and for me customer service is my top most priority. Who knows tomorrow how this good will can work for me.

Of all the challenges of running this business, one major challenge I face is when people are extremely careless about using the property and create excess mess. There are such people, who think that if they have hired for 1 night, they own the place for that 1 night. They forget the difference between hiring and owning. Some of them are so disorganized that they would keep worrying my caretaker till late at night, not realizing that it is already their sleep time. And then there are some who waste resources like anything. Everything is available for my guest's comfort but I do not like when people waste these resources, like tissue rolls, soaps and shampoos and such kind of things. Then there are some people who pluck the fruits and veggies from my garden, as if they have paid for that as well :-). There are some who take home the towels as well that we provide for use. It's like a never-ending thing. I hate when people flick things.

After all the service I give them, all I ask for is a review on Google, or tagging some pictures on Insta of their stay but only 25% to 30% of people do that and that too after multiple follow ups. Everyone appreciates but no one wants to take effort to pen down few lines, which again I feel a little disappointed because I take all the extra effort to give them the best, but they cannot spare 5 minutes to write a review. When someone gives a review, it's like a validation for my effort and it also helps me promote my business.

Anyways that's all part and parcel of a business and cannot do much about it.

Thank you for visiting my blog. 👼🏻👼🏻💖💖🌹🌺🌸
