“If you consider education expensive, try ignorance”, they say. But in true sense, education as a whole seems to be far more expensive, comparative to ignorance. This, I'd say is one of the multiple problems individuals who decide to choose education over ignorance have to face.
Having said all of that, permit me to briefly define education, a student—and then I'll dive right into some of the problems faced by students like myself on our Nigerian campuses.
Education is a process of learning, or acquiring knowledge, skills, values and self development. Educational methods include teaching, training, discussing and even researching.
A student is any person enrolled in an educational institution, learning to acquire knowledge, develop professional skills or achieve employment in a specific field.
As we may know it, students all over the globe go through lots and lots of challenges almost everyday. Here are a few challenges that are peculiar to Nigerian students like myself:
1. Entirely Theoretical Approach Of Learning
Several students across Nigeria like, myself, who study in government owned institutions are usually victims of this problem.
Everything is totally theoretical, we'd barely have opportunities, or yet still, proper equipment and machinery to practice what we're being thought in class. So literally most of our education always begins and ends still in the classroom.
2. Unfavorable Educational Policies
Peculiar to university students, every new elected management comes their own new policies.
For example, last semester In the University of Uyo, some students sporting shorts were forced to go back to change their outfit, regardless of the fact that some of them had their examinations already ongoing at the time.
3. Inadequate Or Absence of Physical Educational Facilities
As earlier mentioned, most government owned institutions of learning only have classrooms to handle the theoretical aspect of learning—sometimes these classrooms are inadequate as the ratio of students to available classrooms is high.
Most of these schools lack sufficient offices, laboratories, some don’t even have toilets, which is really bad—but, yet most of these institutions still come out good from the accreditations.
4. Lecturers' Attitude Towards Students
About One or two lecturers I know are individuals I think became lecturers due to the inability to acquire other jobs they'd have probably preferred—hence, they resorted to becoming lecturers and as such they have not, and may never do it passionately.
Such lecturers will barely form lesson notes, are overly strict, will not take time to explain their lessons well and so on.
5. Lack Of Creative/Passionate Lecturers
To successfully impart knowledge on students, It takes more than just being a qualified lecturer.
It takes creativity and nothing but pure passion to actually educate most kind of students. Most students get bored of studying more quickly than others, and need to be taught in skillful or unconventional ways.
For instance, joke telling or telling very brief stories that are often kind of in relation with the lesson taught, has always proven to be a sure way of quickly getting back everyone's attention in the class.
With all of these challenges faced on our various campuses, God-willing most of us still fight through and come out victorious and with good grades.
I actually do hope that governmental authorities would take it as to create and implement new policies and actually carry out physical development, as to better the educational conditions of students in schools across the country.

Every lecturer needs to take a public speaking course. This will help them a whole lot.

The theoretical aspect of education here needs to be balanced with the practical aspect for quality education.
