The Ekombi dance has its origin among the Efik people of Calabar, Nigeria. It is a dance that is closely associated with the sea. The dancers move in a rhythmic sequence that mirrors the wavy motion of the sea.
They rumble, rise and drop elegantly as they go. You really need a very flexible spine to attempt this dance step as it follows the leading of a telling drom that keeps all the dancers synchronised with choreography.

Only those believed to be very beautiful, judging by our local standard of beauty, are accepted to participate as a dancer in Ekombi.

The dance is physically tasking so dancers should be physically fit and mentally balanced

Starting with a feminine figure to guide the drawing.

From the figure's head, I applied details and colouring

Added more clothing items and details down to the knees.

✅ How long did it take to complete your drawing, and how do you feel about it?

I started and finished this drawing on Saturday 26 April 2025. It took almost the whole day. On this drawing, I was exploring a new drawing technique I recently acquired. At the end, it was worth every second spent on it.

I got the inspiration from a local cultural dance called Ekombi. You should see the elegant dance steps following the rhythmic movement of the sea as they rise and drop.
