Examination malpractice has been at an alarming rate, which is one of the biggest problems we face in Africa, specifically in Nigeria. Examination malpractice can be defined as illegal activities carried out by students in both secondary and high institutions before and after examinations so that they can achieve victory when the results are out. The most common examination malpractice that students engage in illegally are the West Africa Examination Council (WAEC) and the National Examination Council (NECO).
Economic factors are said to be the major causes why some teachers in Nigeria engage in these fraudulent activities. The salary they receive from the government is very low which means it is not enough for them to take care of their family. So, some of them prefer to make money through these illegal means.
Examination malpractice is not something we must depend on because it is a cankerworm that affects the educational system in Nigeria. The effects of examination malpractice are discussed below:
• Individuals or students who engage in these illegal activities would not be able to defend their certificates. In that case, we view them as unprofessional people who cannot perform excellently in academic activities.
• Nigeria's image can no longer be protected because foreign students from other countries will not trust how the educational system in Nigeria is being operated.
• The hardworking students would be discouraged, which will eventually result in low self-esteem. This students will later be relent because they would not put more effort to read their books.
• Hardworking students are also denied admissions in any Nigerian university or polytechnic, but students who use illegal means to get good scores through examination malpractice are favored.
The following are the techniques we can use to solve the problem of examination malpractice:
√ Workshop or seminars can be organized by the school administrators for parents and teachers about the dangerous aspects of examination malpractice because it can destroy the future of students.
√ Well-qualified teachers should be employed in both public and private schools so that they can teach students effectively and efficiently. Also, the knowledge imparted to them can be useful.
√ The government should provide schools with all the necessary educational materials they need to enhance learning.
√ Schools should admit students who are ready to learn, and at the same time, the National Orientation Agency should educate people about the effects of examination malpractice in our society.
Conclusion
Examination malpractice continues to damage our educational system in Nigeria. Some students who engage in this intellectual fraud cannot boldly defend themselves. Parents have a lot of work to do today by telling their children about the punishment involved if they get caught.
