When we talk about fairly used products to my own understanding, we're referring to items that have already been owned or used by someone else but are still in good condition and can be resold. On the other hand, brand new products are fresh from the manufacturer, unused, untouched, and sold for the very first time.

Now, at face value, it’s easy to say that brand new products are obviously the better choice. And honestly, I agree. Who wouldn’t want something fresh, unused, and guaranteed to work perfectly?
But have I ever been in a position where I had to choose between a fairly used product and a brand new one?
Hmm… Actually, yes. Though, it wasn’t exactly a conscious decision. I was in a tight spot I needed a phone, and the only option I had at the time was a fairly used one at home. It wasn’t like I had the luxury of choosing a brand new phone. I had to make do with what was available.
But if I had the chance to decide freely, I’d definitely go for a brand new product
Let’s use iPhones as an example , they’re probably the most commonly bought fairly used products in the market right now. Yes, brand new iPhones are expensive. But UK-used ones (as we call them here) are still more affordable than the new ones, and a lot of people go for those instead.
Now, here's the thing. If those fairly used phones were Nigerian-used, most of us wouldn’t even consider them. Why? We don’t trust our own people when it comes to selling used stuff. There’s this unspoken fear that you're being handed someone else's problems. But when it's labeled “UK-used,” there’s this automatic belief that it’s in better condition—even if that’s not always the case.
So, when it comes to making a choice, I just look at my pocket. If I can afford the brand new one, I’ll definitely go for it. Because let’s be honest there’s something deeply satisfying about knowing you're the first person to use something. No hidden issues, no past user damage. You’re getting full value for your money.
Have I ever regretted a choice like this?
Not really, mainly because I haven’t often had the chance to choose freely. But if I ever went for a fairly used item and it started acting up, trust me, I’d regret not waiting a little longer to save up for something brand new.
In fact, I remember back in the day when my sister got a second-hand Blackberry, what we in Port Harcourt call “Tokunbo.” We laughed at her because, well, someone else had used it before. But to be fair, that phone served her well for a while. It was worth the money untill it started having issues. That’s when it began revealing the reason why the original owner sold it off. And yeah, she did start to regret not just waiting to get a new one.
At the end of the day, it all comes down to your financial situation. Most people go for fairly used products simply because brand new ones are out of reach. But if given the chance and the means, I’d always pick brand new every single time.
They’re the real deal.

It really depends on the type of item. Different items depreciate at different rates. Some things start to increase in value as they become antiques.
Apple programs planned obsolescence into the iPhone. This creates a predictable life cycle. New iPhones are expensive. They depreciate quickly. A two year old iPhone trades for a third the price of a new phone. Sadly an eight year old phone no longer works.
Furniture is interesting. Most furniture sold in the store these days is garbage which will probably break within a decade. Used furniture (aka the stuff that survived a decade and didn't break) is probably a higher quality and will last longer than new furniture.
The answer to the question changes depending on the product.
