The artist does not have to imitate anyone. Let him take his hand to his heart and study “it”, what comes out of him; if he possesses the true fiber of the artist, “it” will tell him everything. Trust in what you write, even if from time to time you achieve magnificent failures.
Giuseppe Verdi
The artist must be very strong mentally, look for a balance. Then you have to decide if you want art in your life. To give color (true color as Kitty likes) something true, that sometimes we are these nomads that society divides. When we create (paint, write, etc.) we don't have like-minded people to talk to, show, criticize or learn from. Which leads to more frustration and is where ninety percent of artists are left. Years later, all that wonder you have inside you that wants to flow. It's always like a tide, a tsunami that we have blocked that will break through the dykes of the soul at some point. You realize that you burned the boats, perhaps, not to return. You took the colors out of your life.
Artists need space to communicate ideas and show their art. And as far as possible forget that emptiness of loneliness that you carry, if you are in the right spaces, people related to art. Of course, you will be motivated. Art can improve lives, it can be medicine for the soul, for many who have been in deep mud. There is little appreciation in modern society for art.
Then there are those who have the resources and are not interested in creating or at least improving themselves. They are forgotten, one of these days. Art is a very broad concept. With many edges. So you have a choice if people like @wakeupkitty choose to help and motivate. Then art is that place where we can meet and reach out to those who offer their hearts with a smile.

I consider myself an artist even if I don't create. I am an introvert, but that doesn't stop me from stimulating others and trying to help where I can,
Steemit could do way more since not only artists need critics, but everyone does (critics are not necessarily negative, it is the personal vision how we look at the said words that makes us dislike them or label it as negative).
Most artists aren't strong, they are vulnerable, emotional, overwhelmed but they can be if they have peace of mind and are surrounded by like minded.
Should the freewriters and Art & Steemit let themselves be drowned by vutures only out for a chunk of free meat?

@wakeupkitty
In each of the golden ages of history, there have been newspapers and other media, dedicated to criticism. They were very famous. They made many artists known. Criticism generates controversy, progress. Not all criticism is negative, as you rightly say, it is a paradigm misconfigured in the mind. I like real criticism. I could draw experiences from negative criticism, of course criticism with foundations.
Lezama Lima, one of the writers of the group origins in Cuba. One of the greats (he was a living encyclopedia), he became important in Cuba and the world because of a note (criticism) written by Julio Cortazar. Then the foreign media and in Cuba, immediately published his novel PARADISO. Have you heard of Lezama Lima?
