A distributed ledger can be defined as a database maintained in a decentralized form, consensually accessible and synchronized on all network spread across multiple sites and institutions. Ever since its discovery, professionals have continued to research on areas where the distributed ledger is applicable. It has been adopted in the finance sector, healthcare sector, package delivery institutions and many more. The key factor behind its increasing popularity in the various sector of the economy is because of the edge it has over the centralized ledger. Unlike the centralized ledger, stored information can only be accessed through assigned keys and cryptographic signatures, this makes it resilient against cyber-attacks. More so, it addresses the menace of data manipulation by fraudulent staff. Despite these remarkable qualities, the distributed ledger cannot perform a smooth internal communication among ledgers, this makes it difficult to select the distributed ledger technology that will best fit the purpose and the requirements needed when considering distributed ledger technology for decentralized applications.
OVERLEDGER
Overledger is a new block-chain platform designed to solve the problem inherent in the single ledger. Unlike the single ledger that operates by exclusively defining a platform connector, each accommodating the plugin of the compliant distributed ledger technology, the over ledger adopts a reliable and independent wire-based protocol for all message-oriented middleware (software that connects operating system and the application running on it). The over ledger application is designed to treat blockchain by binding them as a decentralized train of transactions where messages are tagged to transactions and are appended to the required ledger. To address the inherent issues in the single ledger, the over ledger has the following features
- Seamless cross-ledger operations among different distributed ledger technology
- Mitigating tools against cyber attack
- Processes transaction faster
How does the over ledger perform a seamless transaction?
To ensure an efficient operation the over ledger has 4 different layers. They are:
Transaction Layer
This layer is made up of the combination of different ledgers. It stores transactions that are entered into the ledger.
Messaging Layer
The duty of this layer is to save all transactional record. More so, apart from transactional information, important information such as smart contract and metadata are saved in the messaging layer.
Filtering and ordering layer
The duty of this layer is establishing connections between messages that were established in the
Application layer
The function of this layer is to systematically select transactions in the database and verify their status. Messages that have the standard signature and conform to the acceptable format make up the list of the application messages.
TRANSACTIONAL PROPERTIES INHERENT IN THE OVERLEDGER
Consistency:
The over-ledger transactional data exist in a steady state throughout the transaction processes
Durability:
Even After the end of a successful transaction, the occurrence of system failure cannot later transactional data.
Atomicity:
The over ledger is designed to perform all data manipulation as a single operation.
Isolation:
The processing state of an executed transaction is obscured to other ongoing transactions. This makes simultaneous transactions appear serialized.
