How to survive rejection

in life •  20 days ago

Rejection is painful. We may see it as proof that we're unlovable. If someone we like ignores us, we start to doubt ourselves. We might wonder, "Am I not good enough?" or "What did I do wrong?" These feelings can make us believe we're unworthy of love.

Often, we worsen the pain of rejection ourselves. Instead of dealing with our feelings, we criticize ourselves harshly. We focus on our flaws and feel disgusted. When we need a boost, we instead destroy our self-esteem.

Rejection is not about you as a person. It's about a specific situation or relationship. If someone stops talking to you, it means something didn't work for them. You're not rejected for who you are. It simply means some needs weren't met.

Dating apps can lead to unrequited feelings. People judge you based on your profile. Each left swipe is a rejection. So, know your strengths and prepare for different outcomes before you start.

Dr. Nicole Nasr, a psychologist, says rejection is part of dating apps. You have seconds to grab someone's attention with your profile.

If your profile doesn't click with someone, they won't like you back. That's okay.

Dr. Nasr says it's key to be ready for the challenges of dating. This includes rejection. If your self-esteem is low, build your confidence first. Then, start meeting people.

Low self-esteem and past hurts can make rejection harder.

Dr. Nasr notes that humans are social. Rejection hurts because we open up to others. This is emotional and physical through intimate encounters. We want to love and be loved. So, it hurts when someone turns us away.

It's hard, but possible, to cope with rejection. Support from friends and self-esteem help.

Rejection has benefits. It stops us from wasting time on bad relationships. Each unreturned feeling gets us closer to what we want. View rejection as a sign on the path to your relationship goals, not a measure of your worth.

To stop taking rejection personally, understand yourself. Know what matters to you. Does your life match your values? Do you believe in yourself? What will boost your self-esteem? Self-knowledge will prove your worth.
