STEEM ATLAS [20 Apr '25] : 21 Tips to Make Better Posts for Steem Atlas

in steem-atlas •  16 days ago  (edited)

More people are joining Steem Atlas every day.

Many are becoming seasoned and successful Steem Atlas contributors.

Others are making simple mistakes that cost them rewards.

Our vision is to make Steem Atlas a valuable 'go-to' source of information for the world beyond Steem.

It is important that every post is clear, well presented, easy to understand and full of valuable information.

We have therefore put together these 21 tips to help people improve their posts on Steem Atlas.

The Atlas Ambassadors and curators will often give you suggestions to improve your posts following these 21 Tips. Make sure you act on these suggestions on the same post straightaway. That will improve your rewards and help you move up the Leaderboard...

Atlas Tips

Here are 21 ways you can make better posts for Steem Atlas...

  1. Make sure your pin is in the correct location.
Cross reference with Google Maps if you are not sure.

  2. Use the name of the place, and general location, in the Pin Description.
Generally you shouldn't need the whole post title in the Pin Description.

  3. Make your post title concise, but descriptive.
The audience for Steem Atlas is beyond Steem, so try not to include Steem specific information in the title.
Mentioning Club status or Burnsteem25 for example should definitely not be in the title.

  4. Keep the introduction of your post as brief as possible.
Again remember the external audience so cut out unnecessary greetings and thanks.

  5. Choose a good strong image as the first image that will become the thumbnail.
Use a single image wherever possible; composite images made in Canva generally make weaker thumbnails.

  6. Be selective on your use of photographs.
Use fewer, better photos and make them bigger. Don't repeat near similar images.
Don't use any images that are blurred or out of focus.

  7. Put meaningful captions under each photograph.
Use a caption to let the reader know what each image shows.
There is no need to put your attribute on every photo - just include that at the end for all the photos.
You should generally only be using your own photos on Steem Atlas.

  8. Work hard to present your post well.
Use headings, correct punctuation and white space to make the post visually attractive and easy to follow.
Double check for spelling and grammatical mistakes - if you make these mistakes Google Translate will have problems to translate and the post will have much less value.

  9. Include prices where appropriate.
Include prices in the local currency and the equivalent in STEEM (or US$).
Generally, because of exchange variations, you only need to include whole numbers of STEEM for the equivalent amount (for example 5 STEEM). If it is a low amount you might want to include one decimal place but no more (for example 1.5 STEEM, not 1.446 STEEM).

  10. Include website and social media links where appropriate.
Links to other sites for the place your post is about are very useful for extra information.

  11. Include opening times if appropriate.
This adds to the content value of the post.

  12. Include entry fees if appropriate.
Again this adds to the content value of the post.

  13. Only include links to other mapping systems.
It can be useful to include links to other mapping systems such as Google Maps and What3Words for cross-referencing. But only include links not screen-captures. These links should all be at the end of the post - not the beginning.

  14. Do not include Steem Atlas screenshots.
You are posting on the Steem Atlas mapping site so it is redundant to include screenshots of the Steem Atlas pin location. The only time you might need to do this is if you are including some extra annotations to the map showing your pin location.

  15. Include the date of your visit.
It does not matter if your visit to the place you are posting about was some time ago, but it is important to say when you visited so that it gives context to prices etc.

  16. Keep the end of your post tidy.
Again remember the external audience - don't include unnecessary graphics and gifs at the end of your post.

  17. Consider using a 'data-block' at the end of your post.
This can be a table that includes for example... date of visit, address, phone number, email address, website, social media links, and other map links.

  18. Use tags wisely.
Good tag use helps your post get found. At a basic level you can use...
    #typeofplace #city #country #steem-atlas (eg #museum #paris #france #steem-atlas)

  19. Make every word count.
Cut out any unnecessary greetings, thanks, repetitive descriptions etc.

  20. Remember the audience.
Steem Atlas is all about providing information both for other Steemians and hopefully soon for the wider world. Posts should contain useful, accurate information that is well presented and easy to read.

  21. Check and re-check.
Check your posts carefully before publishing. Particularly look out for different spellings of the place name, general spelling errors, punctuation mistakes, text that is too dense with very long sentences or paragraphs, repeated images, images without captions...
    Remember carelessness costs rewards !
